It is the middle of July, and the holidays probably still feel a long way off.
They are not.
If you want your kitchen, bathroom, flooring, tile, or another part of your home finished before Thanksgiving or Christmas, now is the time to start planning.
1. Fall Remodeling Schedules Fill Earlier Than You Think
A contractor may already be scheduling projects several weeks or months ahead.
Before construction begins, there is usually an estimate, project planning, material selection, ordering, and scheduling. Waiting until September or October may mean the contractor you want is already booked through the holidays.
Starting now gives you time to compare contractors, work through the scope, build a realistic budget, and make decisions without rushing.
It also helps you avoid hiring someone just because they say they can start tomorrow. Availability does not always mean quality.
2. Materials Can Hold Up the Entire Project
Not every remodeling product is sitting on a store shelf ready to install.
Cabinets, countertops, specialty tile, flooring, plumbing fixtures, windows, doors, and custom products may take weeks to arrive. One missing item can delay several other parts of the job.
Cabinets affect countertops. Appliances affect cabinet openings. Sinks and faucets affect plumbing. Tile selections affect layouts, trim pieces, and grout.
The major materials should be selected before demolition begins whenever possible.
The earlier those decisions are made, the fewer surprises there should be once the work starts.
3. Leave Room for the Unexpected
Remodeling means working with an existing home, and existing homes do not always reveal every problem until they are opened up.
Water damage, rotten subflooring, outdated wiring, poor previous repairs, and framing problems can affect the schedule. Products may also arrive late, damaged, or different from what was ordered.
Do not plan for construction to end the day before guests arrive.
Leave enough time for final details, cleanup, inspections, and repairs that could not have been seen at the beginning.
A smaller project completed correctly is better than a large remodel rushed to meet an unrealistic deadline.
